Working, Saving, Aspiring: What a 14-Year-Old Is Teaching Us This Summer

June 23, 2025 – I’m brimming with pride as I share the story of my youngest daughter—only 14 years old—who has just wrapped up her second summer working her very first job.

This spring, she took the initiative: deciding where she wanted to work, she walked in and dropped off her resume in person. When days passed without a response, she didn’t stop there. Instead, she followed up with two phone calls—persistent but polite—and still heard nothing. Undeterred, she headed back in, ready to ask if her application had even been looked at. That bold move paid off: they offered her an interview—and she said yes, right on the spot.

From that moment, she’s embraced the job wholeheartedly—working whatever shifts they send her way, eager and adaptable. Day in and day out, she’s tackled every responsibility: scrubbing dishes, cleaning restrooms, taking out the trash, mopping floors, serving customers, handling transactions, and even crafting fancy coffees and smoothies. It’s hard work, often thankless, and far from glamorous—but she approaches it all with enthusiasm and responsibility.

What touches me most? What she’s doing with her earnings. She’s committed to saving 70% of her paycheck toward her dream of becoming a doctor. Every cent she sets aside is a deposit into her future. The remaining 30% covers what matters now: a new computer she’s saving up for, and some well-earned time to enjoy with friends. It’s a balanced vision—dedication for tomorrow, but also joy for today.

She’s leaning in—hard. Whether it’s offering to cover a coworker’s shift or volunteering for extra tasks, she’s looking for ways to contribute beyond what’s asked. It’s not just about earning money; it’s about proving she can be relied on, responsible, and proactive.

This summer she isn’t just working a job—she’s laying the groundwork for who she wants to become. Every shift, every challenge, every dollar saved is a step toward her goal of entering medicine. I could not be more impressed.
